Our culture assigns moral values to lots of things where they don't really belong. You know — salad is "good", dessert is "bad". Or maybe someone who can run farther is "better" than someone who needs to rest more.
So many of my clients come to me feeling shame over issues like these. Honestly, most of us have experienced this. You've heard it said that "women don't eat on dates". And most people — whether they admit it or not — have tried to hide feeling winded after walking up a flight of stairs.
What if I told you that your genetics may be the reason for some of these things? That's right. These are not moral issues or personal failings.
Just because you have lower endurance than your spouse or need to eat a lot to feel full doesn't make you a bad person. It doesn't say anything about your character or your self-control.
And that's where genetic testing comes in. There are a lot of genetic tests out there, but 3x4 Genetics is by far my favorite. This test puts things together for you extremely well — much better than other genetic testing companies. And show it to with pictures, which are different for each person. It's amazing!
So, why do genetic testing? Many people think you can't do anything about your genes. You're born with what you're born with, right?
Well, yes and no. You can't change your genes, but you can change their expression. If you have a gene that predisposes you to a certain disease, that doesn't mean that you'll get the disease.
What you eat, how you move, your emotional state, and stress levels all impact how your genes behave. And when you understand your genetic blueprint, you can see exactly what types of diet, lifestyle, and supplement choices you can make to keep yourself healthy.
I got some big surprises when I ran the 3x4 Genetics Test on myself.
I found out that my body has a hard time with methylation — which is an important part of detoxification. But now that I know this, I can take the special B vitamins and eat more leafy greens to combat the problem.
I also discovered that my elevated blood pressure could be brought down by lowering my salt intake. Believe it or not, this is not the case for most people. Generally, good quality unrefined sea salt is great for you. It provides your body with much-needed minerals and doesn't affect blood pressure at all. But it turns out that I have a component in my genetics that makes me the exception, not the rule. So... less salt for me. And since I've cut back, my blood pressure has gone down!
The biggest surprise came in the mood and behavior area. As I mentioned above, 3x4 Genetics individualizes the reports, including personalized pictures for everybody. For the mood and behavior section, they'll show a color-coded image of a brain.
Most of my clients come back with their brain a happy blue and green with maybe a little yellow. No big deal.
My brain infographic came back red, orange, and yellow. 😲 This was shocking to me. I think of myself as a pretty calm person, and my friends and family would agree. But it turns out I need additional care in this area. Because of my genetics, I don't process the calming neurotransmitter GABA very well.
So, I badly need to get outside, have time alone, and do calming activities like yoga and tai chi. I love yoga and I've always known I need quiet time, and I L-O-V-E to be outside, though I rarely take the time for it. But now I know these things aren't a luxury for me, and taking care of myself in this way has become a non-negotiable priority.
There were other results that didn't surprise me. I have issues with collagen and joints. But I knew this because I've been prone to joint pain and injury.
The other not-surprise had to do with eating.
I have a huge appetite. And it's all because of my genetics.
I've always known I need to eat a lot in order to feel full and satisfied. But now I know that it's a genetic trait. It's nothing to be ashamed of. There is no reason I should try to live up to some crazy cultural ideal that says women should "eat like birds".
So I manage my appetite by adding in extra veggies or a huge salad before dinner. That way I feel satisfied and get the healthy nutrients my body needs!
I also found out why I have a very very high endurance capacity (and very low power capacity). When I hike with my husband, I'm the one carrying the backpack looking back and thinking "what are you doing back there?" I can just go and go and go. And again, this isn't because of some noble character trait. It's genetic.
I love this test for so many reasons. We are not helpless when it comes to our genetics. It's so much better to find out what's going on so we can change our diet, supplements, and lifestyles accordingly. We can make the small changes that make a big difference.
I've found, when utilizing the 3x4 Genetics testing with my clients, that I need two appointments to effectively explain the results and come up with the food, supplement, and lifestyle changes best for their unique situation. To make that more affordable, I have bundled up the test and the 2 appointments into a package which offers a greater savings than if ordered separately.
